Privacy policy

What data this site handles, who handles it and what you can do about it. Written to be understood on a single reading.

Who is responsible

The controller is whoever maintains Salary to Life, a personal project with no company behind it. The way to raise anything covered by this policy, including exercising your rights, is to write to salarytolife@gmail.com.

Salary to Life is a personal project: two calculators that estimate how much of a salary survives tax in eight countries, and what savings turn into over time.

What is processed, and what is not

It is worth starting with what does not happen, because it tends to be the real worry: the figures you type into the calculators — your salary, your expenses, your household — are never sent to a server. The whole calculation runs inside your browser and the result never leaves your device. There are no user accounts, there is no database holding your numbers, and nobody, this project included, can look them up.

What is processed, and the reason this page exists, comes in three kinds:

  • Technical connection data, logged automatically by the hosting provider whenever your browser asks for a page: IP address, date and time, the page requested, browser type.
  • Data handled by advertising, which Google manages and which is described below.
  • Whatever you choose to tell us if you write to the contact address, which is limited to what you put in the message.

Beyond that, the site keeps a few preferences in your browser's local storage so you do not have to repeat them: the values you entered in each calculator (under the keys "finan:cash-flow" and "finan:compound-interest"), your language, and whether you chose the light or dark theme. That lives on your machine, is never transmitted, and disappears the moment you clear the site's data from your browser.

Hosting

The site is hosted by Vercel Inc., based in the United States. Like any web server, it logs the requests it receives — your IP address among them — in order to serve pages, balance load and detect abuse. Those logs are kept for a limited period and are not combined with anything else.

The resulting transfer of data to the United States relies on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses and on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Their privacy policy has the detail.

Advertising: Google AdSense

This site is funded by advertising and uses Google AdSense, a service of Google Ireland Limited, as a third-party ad vendor. That is why this policy exists in the shape you are reading.

  • Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site.
  • Google's use of the DART cookie enables it to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.
  • Third-party vendors and ad networks other than Google may also use cookies, web beacons or similar technologies to measure how the ads shown to you perform.

How Google uses information from sites that use its services is set out on its partner sites page.

If you are in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the United Kingdom, a consent message managed by Google appears the first time you arrive. What you choose there decides whether the ads you see are personalised, and you are free to change your mind at any point: the cookie policy explains how.

Turning off personalised advertising

You do not have to stop using the site to stop seeing ads based on your activity. There are three routes, none of which depends on us:

  • Switch personalisation off directly in Google's ad settings, which applies everywhere Google serves ads.
  • Opt out across participating vendors at aboutads.info, the industry initiative in the United States.
  • Do the same from Europe at Your Online Choices, the EDAA's portal.

You will still see ads, but they will stop being chosen on the basis of your browsing history.

Who else is involved

The list of third parties is short, and this is all of it:

  • Google Ireland Limited, for advertising and the consent message.
  • Vercel Inc., for hosting and delivering the pages.

There is no web analytics, no social network pixel, no heatmap or session recording tool. Typefaces are served from this same domain rather than fetched from Google Fonts, so loading a page makes no request to Google beyond advertising.

For how long

The host's technical logs are kept for the period its provider applies, in the order of weeks, and then deleted. Advertising cookies last as long as Google declares for each one, between a few minutes and two years. Emails you send are kept for as long as the matter requires. Anything stored in your browser lasts until you clear it.

Your rights

You can exercise your rights of access, rectification, erasure, objection, restriction of processing and portability by writing to salarytolife@gmail.com. We will need to be able to identify you, and we will answer within one month.

It is only fair to be plain about the scope: since there are no accounts and no database, in practice we hold no profile of you to show or delete. The data that does exist sits with Google and with Vercel, and the links in the sections above lead to the controls they offer, which are more effective than anything we could do on your behalf.

If you believe your rights have not been respected, you may lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority; in Spain that is the Spanish Data Protection Agency.

Children

This site is not aimed at children under fourteen and does not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child in your care has given us data, write to us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If what the site does changes, this page changes, and the date at the top tells you when that last happened. Material changes — a new provider, a new purpose — are announced on the site before they take effect.
